Our Firm

Katz, Bernstein & Katz is recognized throughout the New York-Metropolitan region as a proactive, value-added law firm, whose client relationships go beyond the traditional attorney client engagement.  We strive to establish excellent relationships with all of our clients, whether we are developing a succession plan for a family-owned business, working on a merger for a closely-held company, forming a new business venture or professional practice, negotiating a tax matter for a small business, or creating an estate plan for an individual. Our firm was built on a commitment to the highest standards of professional legal ethics and technical excellence in service to our clients.

Our legal acumen in matters of taxation, estate and succession planning in all kinds of business-related matters has not been lost on our professional peers in the accounting, financial planning and legal fields. They know we can be relied upon as valuable allies capable of addressing even the most complex legal issues for them or for their clients.

History

Katz, Bernstein & Katz was founded in 1980 by Senior Partners Robert Katz and Edwin A. Bernstein. Our law firm, which was originally known as Katz & Bernstein, built its practice with a concentration in taxation and estate and succession planning, but each of the founding partners brought experience beyond the scope of the conventional attorney.

Robert Katz, who has a graduate law degree (LLM) in taxation, as well as direct experience at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), provided a strong foundation for our taxation practice, including estate and trust taxation planning. His combined experience makes him a formidable advocate for clients in a wide range of areas including both federal (IRS) and New York State taxation matters.

Complementing Bob’s background was the experience of Edwin Bernstein in real estate, Securities and Exchange and business formation.  This diversity, along with Mr. Bernstein’s experience providing legal services in Central and South America, made him a valuable asset to the firm and its clientele.

In 1991, Managing Partner Neil D. Katz joined the firm and became not only the second generation of the Katz family in the firm, but also the next phase in the firm’s evolution.  In addition to strengthening the firm’s resources in the areas of taxation, estate planning, strategic business planning and transactions, Neil fostered an analytical approach to problem solving and the firm’s further entry into a broader arena of corporate legal services.

Lara R. Chwat joined the firm in 2000 and was named a partner in July, 2006.  Ms. Chwat contributes technical expertise in all areas of Federal, New York State and New York City taxation.  Her knowledge of complex business transactions has allowed for further development of the firm’s small business transaction practice. Lara also handles many of the firm’s probate and administration matters with compassion and understanding of the needs of people facing a difficult time in their lives.
